Western Australia receives wake up call on dwindling water supply.

A report from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) forecasts that the capital city of Perth in Western Australia state could see water supplies reduced by 50% in two decades.

This is due in part to less groundwater availability, including the Gnangara Aquifer that supplies Perth's drinking water, which is expected to decline 33% by 2030.

Perth and surrounding areas have already experienced a 50% reduction in water supplies since the mid-1970s, which has been attributed to global warming.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong stated that the recent CSIRO report and its forecast of further reduced resources brings significant concern for the region.

Your Excellency, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization researchers and Australia, we appreciate your work and cautionary concern.

Let us swiftly adopt lifestyles to reverse these adverse effects and restore our planet for future generations.

In an August 2009 videoconference in Thailand, Supreme Master Ching Hai urged as she has in previous times for immediate action to counter the world’s fast dwindling water supplies.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We have over six billion people in this world and the sources of groundwater for wells, which supports half of our world population, are dying, drying up. And the top ten global river systems, drying or ebbing away.

And three billion people are short of water. How many more, I don’t know, how many more of suffering people are we waiting before we take action? Please do it now! Just be veg. Stop the meat, dairy, fish industry. Be benevolent.

Create a merciful energy that will envelop our world, that will emit mercy, love, protection for us and our children on this planet. Please take action now. Very simple. Just be veg.

Tibet’s climate is dangerously warming

With data that was recorded across 29 observatories, including the base of Mount Everest, China’s Meteorological Administration reported that 2009 temperatures were the warmest on record and that precipitation was the lowest in nearly 40 years.

Saying that the Tibet Autonomous Region is particularly vulnerable to climate change effects, Zheng Guoguang, head of China’s Meteorological Administration stated, “The impact of global warming has accelerated glacial shrinkage and the melting glaciers have swollen Tibet’s lakes... If the warming continues, millions of people … would face floods in the short term and drought in the long run.”

Many thanks Mr. Zheng and China’s Meteorological Administration, for these factual observations that highlight our global predicament. As we pray for the safety of people in Tibet’s Autonomous Region and beyond, let us all hasten our efforts to restore the ecosphere.

As on previous occasions, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke with concern of the rising toll of climate change during an October 2009 videoconference in Hong Kong, along with the actions needed to avert a planetary crisis.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Tens of thousands of lakes and rivers throughout the world are drying out now due to global warming and glaciers melting. It is thus only a matter of time Knowing this, it would be best if we adopt the lifestyle that will restore the stability of our environment and benefit all beings in the world, which surely is the compassionate way of life, beginning with a vegan diet – no animal products.

World’s major rivers dropping due to climate change.

In evaluating stream flows between 1948 and 2004, researchers at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) found that the water flow in one third of the world’s largest rivers had become significantly reduced. Many factors affected this, including dams and water diverted for agriculture and industry. The scientists said these findings were consistent with their previous studies that showed drying and increased drought over land areas worldwide. They also noted that the diminished river flows had larger ecological and climate implications, as these giant rivers provide valuable deposits of nutrients and minerals when they pour out into the world’s oceans. Their content and flow thus affects ocean circulation, which itself plays a key role in regulating the world’s climate.

We appreciate your comprehensive studies, National Center for Atmospheric Research scientists in helping us understand the perilous balance of our water supplies. Let us all turn toward sustainable solutions to conserve this precious resource and return our Earth to equilibrium and peace.

During the March 2009 “Juice Fast for Peace” videoconference in California, USA, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of this very dilemma, suggesting the solution that is sure to bring relief to both people and the planet.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
March 7, 2009 – Culver City, California, USA

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We have water shortage and all the reservoirs are dwindling at such an alarming rate. Meat industry should be cut. That will help the planet. That will help to reserve our water, to refuel our lakes and our rivers again. That is physically and scientifically speaking. I’m not talking about the merit, the bad karmic contribution that we are doing to ourselves by harming others. If we forgo 1 pound of beef, we can save more water than we stop showering for half a year. So if we really want to save the water for the world, then we have to change to a vegetarian diet, animal-free diet. Animal industry must be out.

Acidity kills fish as rivers dry up

Aquatic life in danger due to drying rivers. As the region continues to face extreme drought, data shows that water levels in Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin linger at just 16% of capacity, nearing record lows. Meanwhile, the water’s acidity is on the rise, causing countless fish to lose their lives in the shallow rivers off the Murray. People have also been affected, with the loss of crop irrigation causing growers sacrifice businesses and homes. Even drinking water is at risk, with dry conditions increasing the chance of algal blooms that would contaminate this key resource of many small towns.

We pray for the resiliency of the Australian people as they endure these difficult times. May the balance of Mother Nature return as we all step in unison to adopt sustainable and planet-friendly lifestyles.

During an August 2008 videoconference with our Association members in Sydney, Australia, Supreme Master Ching Hai once again expressed her concern for the fragile state of our ecosphere and, as in other occasions, reminded of the government and media’s role in helping address the root cause and only solution for global warming.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The governments of the world already are aware of the dire situation of our planet. So I hope they will act as soon as possible and on time, to save themselves, as well as the people.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Especially it’s up to the government and the media to help to alleviate the situation. If they don’t turn into the compassionate way of life, then I don’t know what else to do.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The law of cause and retribution has to take place, no matter we like it or not. There is no escape from that. And we are trying to let people know this, to remind them the law of universe. To remind them of their true great compassionate, loving Self, and now it’s up to people. I wish I have a magic wand and wave it around and hoop-la, everybody become vegetarian, planet is saved. But it’s not like that. They have to awaken themselves. They have to practice compassion. Then the compassion will beget compassion; love will beget love.
