Scientists say extreme winter weather fits global warming

According to the assessment of both US and European researchers, the frigidly cold weather and massive storm systems that occurred this past winter throughout the US and Europe were all part of a warming climate.

Frank Boettcher, Director of the German Institute for Weather and Climate Communication, stated, “Right now, temperatures in Greenland are 15 degrees Celsius above the season's long-term average.”

He went on to say that even with the cold temperatures in Central and Northern Europe, German weather statistics reveal an average temperature that is at least one degree Celsius higher than 100 years ago.

Moreover, a 2009 US Climate Impacts Report stated that global warming has caused large cold weather systems to move northward, with mid-latitude storms decreasing in frequency but rising in intensity as the hotter air retains more moisture, resulting in the release of enormous amounts of snowfall.

Satellite data in fact showed that the two large winter storms that recently impacted the US occurred during the warmest winter on record for the region. Director Boettcher and other European and US scientists, we are grateful for your insights that remind us of the perilous state of our ecosphere.

Let us all do our utmost to restore planetary stability by acting now in united and Earth-supporting ways.

As during a January 2009 videoconference in Mongolia, Supreme Master Ching Hai has often emphasized the real urgency of global warming and our actions that can quickly counter it.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We are already facing so many untold natural disasters on a daily basis such as earthquakes, severe storms never seen before, volcanoes, ice melting and many island nations that have sunk under the water already and many are sinking.

And the climate has become very, very strange, like it became warm where it should be cold and it became cold where it should be hot. And this can only be alleviated through a return to the ancient ways of our wiser elders, one that exists in harmony with nature and respect of other beings, a true brotherhood of love with all.

We can still do that; it’s not too late.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We should remind everyone to be veg, to invoke the mercy of the Buddhas, and we will be better protected.

Record high temperatures reported across Canada

With parts of the Arctic and northern Quebec reaching more than 6° Celsius above normal seasonal averages, the nation’s Meteorological Service has reported that this past winter was the warmest and driest on record.

Along with up to 60% less precipitation in some regions for this year alone, the past decade has produced 4 of the ten warmest years on record.

Meanwhile in the United States, a recent analysis by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) affirmed that average temperatures in the past decade have continued to rise rapidly despite year-to-year fluctuations caused by El Niño and La Niña cycles.

Our heartfelt thanks, Canadian and US scientists for this revealing data, despite its unsettling observations.

Let us all move now to adopt planet-cooling actions that restore the balance of our shared global home. In a video message during a June 2009 climate change conference in Veracruz, Mexico, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of the quickest way to reverse the case of ever-extreme temperature rise.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The past decade has twice, at least, seen the hottest average annual temperatures ever recorded in our planet’s history. So, we must cool the planet, first and foremost. And one of the most effective and fastest ways to reduce the heat in the atmosphere is to eliminate methane production.

Methane not only traps up to 72 times more heat than carbon, it also goes away from the atmosphere much faster than CO2.

We can start by cutting down on the biggest methane producer in the world, that is, animal raising. So, to cool the planet most quickly, we have to stop consuming meat in order to stop the livestock raising industry

If everyone in the world would adopt this simple but most powerful practice of an animal-free diet, then we could reverse the effect of global warming in no time.

US scientist assesses regional impact of climate change

Professor Steve Running of the University of Montana, former member of the Nobel laureate UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), recently published results of a study assessing the impact of global warming to the Rocky Mountains in the western USA. His findings include a forecast that climate change in the region was likely to significantly affect wildlife as well as ecosystems and the economy.

The report specifically warned of temperature increases having dramatic impact on forests in the coming decades, with a corresponding worsening of droughts that would incur epidemics of insect infestations and catastrophic wildfires throughout the states of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.

Professor Running, we appreciate this informative report, despite its disturbing implications for the iconic Rocky Mountain range. Let us join in concerted care and act now to bring a sustainable future for our planet.

In speaking of her concern about the consequences of global warming, Supreme Master Ching Hai has also offered a solution to alleviate its effects, as during an August 2008 videoconference with our Association members

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Even if we plant more trees, there will be something else happening, maybe wildfire, or the beetle will be more in abundance, and then they will also begin to eat away all the forest.

So this is a really terrible situation. The only thing is we have to be morally fit. And have to be virtuous. Otherwise, there’s no getting away from the bad karma, meaning the retribution, for whatever we do.

Twice as many record high temperatures as lows in the US

According to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Colorado, USA global warming has triggered unusually mild winters and intense summer heat waves over the past decade.

Research led by NCAR senior scientist Dr. Gerald Meehl surveyed thousands of weather stations across the nation to compare temperatures on a given day to that of the same date throughout the nation’s history.

From the start of 2000 to September 30, 2009, over 290,000 record highs have been set in the US, more than twice the number of record lows in the same time period. As data from the previous 60 years show that record highs and lows have previously been about even, this difference confirms that temperatures are on the rise.

The study also showed that if current trends of increasing greenhouse gas emissions continue, there will be 20 times more record high temperatures than lows by 2050, and 50 times more by 2100.

Dr. Meehl and fellow National Center for Atmospheric Research researchers, our gratitude for your work in revealing this clear but alarming trend. Let us quickly heed such urgent signs and turn to lifestyles that restore the balance of our ecosphere. In an August 2009 videoconference in Thailand, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke once again with concern about the planet’s perilous state and reminded of the fastest way to stabilize our environment.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Everything is heating up so quickly, as we can see from the scientists’ reports on such alarming upheaval, such as rising sea levels and glaciers melting.

We must work quickly to avoid such unwanted outcomes. And the most effective way, as I have mentioned, is the organic vegan diet, organic vegetable farming. This is also the fastest way to reverse the increased warming climate to prevent further damage and disaster.

The more people who understand and change, the more chance our world will be saved in time.

Climate change deaths could soar

Lives lost to warming temperatures could increase. Studies presented at the climate change conference at Copenhagen, Denmark estimate that in the next several decades heat-related deaths in cities will quadruple in number. These new projections take into account day-to-day temperature variability that is consistent with the extremes of global warming. Mr. Simon Gosling, Research Fellow at the UK’s University of Reading said that in London alone, for example, this could easily translate to a loss of 500 people by the summer of 2080.

Mr. Gosling, colleagues and all involved, our sincere appreciation for bringing this valuable information to the public. May the consideration of such potentially tragic effects propel us ever more quickly toward actions to halt the further warming of the planet.

Addressing government officials, media and other dignitaries in Formosa (Taiwan) at a global warming seminar in June 2008, Supreme Master Ching Hai assured that such tragic circumstances need not come to pass – if humanity switches to an animal-free diet.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
for the Critical Moments to Save the Earth: What Can I Do? Seminar Formosa (Taiwan) June 29, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: So I suggest only one thing: just to be veg. Be vegetarian. Choose a vegetarian diet. Then all will cool down. All disaster will disappear. We will see how simple and happy life can be, and how we will think clearly, and how our heart will be more open, more blissful. We can understand many more things than we have up to now. And that we really can live with far less than what we thought possible, and still be happy, survive, satisfied, and healthy.
